The Indiana Utilities Regulator resigns to become a business tax lobbyist State

One of the five commissioners responsible for ensuring that Indiana utilities provide safe, reliable and affordable services to Hoosiers is leaving his post to become a lobbyist for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

David Ober, a graduate of Northwest Purdue University when he first appointed Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb to the Indiana Communal Services Regulatory Commission in 2018, is set to resign as IURC commissioner on June 22, according to the governor’s office.

He will then begin working for the top state business organization as vice president of taxes and public finances, tasked with promoting tax policy favored by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce for Republican-controlled members of the General Assembly.

Ober previously served as a Republican member of the Indiana House from 2012 to 2018, representing five counties in the Fort Wayne area.

“David is one of the most intellectually curious and basic individuals I have ever met in the arena of public policy and rule-making. Pair that with his first-hand knowledge of the General Assembly and his experience in state fiscal matters, and he is ideal for this role, “said Kevin Brinegar, president of the chamber.

“We cannot be more satisfied that we welcomed him to lead our efforts to further improve the tax climate in the country.”

Ober said he was eager to continue the work of his retiring chamber predecessor, Bill Waltz, building on the chamber’s reputation with policy maker Hoosier.

“The leadership of the Indiana Chamber and the public policy team have some of the best minds working to shape the future of trade and the economic environment in our country,” Ober said.

The governor’s office is requesting applications by June 30 from individuals interested in taking Ober’s $ 134,000 a year position at the IURC.
