The new era of laser integration and scalability provides unmatched performance, energy efficiency and reliability
MOUNTAIN VIEV, California, June 6, 2022 / PRNevsvire / - Addressing the growing demands of the silicon photonics market for improved performance, energy efficiency and reliability, OpenLight, a newly launched company, today unveiled the world’s first open photonics platform with integrated lasers.
The OpenLight platform provides a new level of laser integration and scalability to accelerate the development of high-performance photon integrated circuits (PICs) in applications such as datacom, telecom, LiDAR, healthcare, HPC, AI and optical computing. The technology has passed the qualification and reliability tests in the production process of the PH18DA Tower. OpenLight expects to launch the first multi-project open shuttle (MPV) on the PH18DA process, as well as 400G and 800G reference designs with integrated lasers that will be available in the summer of 2022.
“We firmly believe that OpenLight’s technology will transform the silicon photonics industry,” said Dr. Marco Racanelli, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Analog Business Unit of Tover Semiconductor. “Providing an open silicon photonics platform with integrated lasers qualified for the Tower process will help joint customers innovate and encourage the next generation of silicon photonics design on a large scale. We are excited to partner with OpenLight along the way. ”
As the optical industry progresses, the main challenge for silicon photonics has been the integration of lasers and the high costs associated with adding discrete lasers, including the production, assembly and alignment of these lasers. This becomes more important as the number of laser channels and total bandwidth increases. By processing indium phosphide (InP) materials directly on a silicon photonic plate, the PH18DA platform reduces the cost and time of laser addition, enabling volume scalability and improved energy efficiency. In addition, monolithically integrated lasers improve overall reliability and simplify packaging.
“OpenLight paves the way for a new generation of silicon photonics by enabling scalable integration of lasers into optics that can be plugged in and packaged together,” he said. Aveek Sarkar, Vice President of Engineering at Synopsis. “The combination of Synopsis’ unified electronic and photonic design solution and OpenLight’s innovative silicon photonic platform will significantly accelerate the development of photonic ICs.
OpenLight works under the slogan “Open. Integrated. Scalable. The open platform includes integrated lasers, optical amplifiers, modulators, photodetectors and other key photonic components to form a complete solution for low power and high performance photonic ICs. In addition, OpenLight offers selected PIC designs and design services to expedite time to market.
The OpenLight executive team brings decades of practical experience in photonics design and is led by Dr. Thomas Maderchief operating officer, dr. Danijel Šparaćinvice president of business development and strategy, etc. Volkan Kamanvice president of engineering.
“The rapidly evolving silicon photonics market is driven by a relentless demand for the higher bandwidth needed to analyze, store and move complex data,” said Dr. Thomas Mader, Chief Operating Officer of OpenLight. “OpenLight’s open silicone photonic platform with integrated lasers allows scaling from one laser to hundreds, or even thousands of lasers per PIC, all monolithically integrated at the board level. With our platform, companies can enter markets faster in development, accelerate new applications and completely change the way their teams build the photonic systems of tomorrow. “
