CINCINATI (VKSIKS) - Ohio lawmakers passed a law late Wednesday banning transgender girls from joining women’s sports teams in schools, state higher education institutions and private colleges.
He passed with the great support of the GOP 56-28 party votes in the House of Representatives 151, which replaces the Ohio Residential Teachers Program with a two-year local teacher mentoring program that begins in the 2023-2024 school year.
The version released late Wednesday now also says this:
“And to pass a law on saving women’s sports that would require schools, state institutions of higher education and private colleges to designate separate same-sex teams and sports for each sex.”
The bill also requires:
- Transgender athletes to join men’s or joint teams
- Students should receive a signed statement from a doctor confirming their biological sex if it is in question
Schools that knowingly violate HB 151 could face litigation.
Wednesday’s vote was held on the first day of Pride Month.
The bill is going to the Senate for consideration, but that will not happen soon.
The deputies are now on a summer break and will not return to the sessions until the November elections, several deputies told FOKS19 NOV.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association allows transgender girls and boys to compete in teams that match their gender if they meet certain physical criteria.
“Transgender student athletes should have equal opportunities to participate in sports,” their policy said. “The integrity of women’s sports should be preserved. Policies governing sport should be objective, feasible and predictable; they also need to be written, accessible and fairly implemented. Policies governing the participation of transgender students in sport need to be fair in light of the huge differences between individuals in strength, size, musculature and ability. ”

FOX19 NOW has requests for comment from several state deputies from Greater Cincinnati in both political parties.
State Representative Brigid Kelly (D-Cincinnati) told FOX19 USA that this is the second time that Republicans in the House of Representatives have addressed this issue with a last-minute amendment to the law just before the vote.
“It’s all about politics, not real problems,” she said. “It is completely unnecessary and OHSAA already has policies that deal with this issue.”
The law was sponsored by the Republican MP from Harrison County in eastern Ohio, the representative of Don Jones.
When he proposed Bill 151, there was no talk of transgender athletes and said there was too much state control over education.
She added that to the law on Wednesday night through a last-minute amendment by MP Jenna Powell (R-Arcanum).
“Tail. Powell put this same amendment in a previous bill last year that the Senate did not consider. She tries again and puts it in this house bill that Don Jones had. It is up to the Senate to see what to do with this, ”said Bill Bill Seitz (R-Green Township), who voted in favor.
Last year’s Gallup poll concluded that 62% of Americans believe that transgender athletes should play in teams that match their gender at birth.
State Senator George Lang, a Republican whose district includes the cities of West Chester and Liberty in Butler County, says he supports Bill 151 in the House of Representatives and will vote for it when he comes to the Senate.
“Biological males should not compete with biological females under any circumstances due to physical differences,” he told FOKS19 NOV. In general, men tend to have certain physical advantages that women do not have. ”
