Look at yourself as a job, not an employee

Opinions expressed by entrepreneur associates are their own.

How often do you think employees undergo changes that the company makes in line with work commitments, benefits and growth within the organization?

Every. One. Day.

It is not a matter of the change itself, but of not discussing restructuring with the worker before hiring.

Sometimes change is useful, but in other scenarios, decisions can cause a dispute with individual needs or values. The overall problem is that many employees are “at will”, which means that the terms of the relationship can be changed or terminated at the will of either party. Although the number of times when employers change conditions is much higher than employees. Why is that? Because you let them.

Job interview

You sent out 150 applications, finally got a call back, and then you heard a little relief. Maybe all your submissions didn’t go to the SPAM directory after all? The first conversation is often with a recruiter or human resources representative and this is the first opportunity to avoid being a victim. This means stating what you need, what you are not open to and not asking difficult questions.

Businesses provide services and products at a price, and consumers (B2C) or other businesses (B2B) pay for it. The company determines the price, and the buyer pays the price or not.

Employees also provide the service, and if the employee determines the price, then the employer will either pay the price or not (ie your salary, bonus, benefits and other requirements).

There is no rule that says you can’t specify your price. It actually saves time when you do it and recruiters will love you for it. Are you worried that you will determine the price that could be on the lower side of the budget? Aim high!

The following happens: you state the price, they say it is too high, give your budget and you decide whether you can work with it or not. You know how that sounds? Business.

It grows within the company

The only problem with growth within the organization if you are employed “at will” in relation to the union, civil servant, etc. or you get more compensation or opportunities based on seniority, is that your growth sometimes depends on variables beyond your control.

You could work overtime for 3 years, just to be in exactly the same position. This is because the business is run by one and you rely on it, not on managing your own.

The business:

  • It changes their prices (specify what you need).
  • Change their business structure (say how you will do business when they do).
  • It changes their working hours, (set some for yourself because you are not a machine).
  • It changes their direction for the company (do exactly the same for yourself even if it means offering your services to another potential client).

Career goals outside the company

Typically, companies have key performance indicators (i.e., goals and information on how your role will help achieve them). They do it to give you goals and ask you to create them. It is very easy to become fixated on them because very often your ability to work against them dictates part of your compensation and progress.

The only concern about using this model for the entire career is that it is from the perspective of their ultimate value. If you have your own KPI. and use similar quantitative metrics to measure where you are to where you are trying to be, your career could be further optimized.

It remains marketable

It’s easy to be complacent in a role because you’ve been doing it for a few years, but if you had to go back to the market for another job, either voluntarily or instead of quitting, you never want to be another company out of desperation. The best position is to understand the demands of the market so that you can understand how to be a top service provider.
