During head coach Matt LaFleur’s first three seasons, the Green Bay Packers had what they considered a unique game win — 41 to be exact.
In 2019, the Packers finished 18th in total offense and total defense. However, they were efficient on offense (second fewest giveaways with 13) and opportunistic on defense (tied for seventh in sacks with 25).
In 2020, they were No. 1 in NFL scoring (31.8 PPG) and No. 9 in total defense (5,344 yards allowed).
In 2021, they just got help from some amazing heroes.
On the offensive line, the Packers have had close to 10 different starters at various points throughout the season, including struggling Josh Nijman, who has excelled in David Bakhtiari’s place.
Cornerback Russell Douglas didn’t come to Green Bay until October, but he still led the team with five interceptions.
So how will the 2022 Green Bay Packers win their share of games?
How the Packers Will Win Games in 2022
Well, having Aaron Rodgers certainly helps, as has been the case for about 17 years.
However, No. 12 will have to do great without his All-Pro receiver and great friend Davante Adams. Also, speedster Marquez Valdes-Scantling left in free agency.
GM Brian Gutekunst addressed the receiving room by drafting three rookies in North Dakota State’s Christian Watson, Nevada’s Romeo Dub and Nebraska’s Samora Toure. Don’t forget the addition of veteran Sammy Watkins.
These four receivers will help Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb shoulder the burden of Rodgers’ targets. Also, sophomore wide receiver Amari Rogers is hungry for a bounce-back season.
The Packers will collectively beat teams when they pass the ball. If there isn’t going to be a 1,000-yard receiver, there will be three different 700-900-yard receivers. It’s called balance.
Throwing for 600 yards from tight end Robert Tonian, who is he is expected to be ready for the first week.
Each of the receivers and tight ends will have their own individual jobs to perform.
For example, Randall Cobb, who knows Aaron Rodgers better than anyone, will be his key slot option. He always was.
Rookie Christian Watson, who is 6-4 and 4.3, will be the offensive lineman. Seventeen-year-old Mercedes Lewis will be the key team to block the race. That’s exactly what he was one of the best in the league.
The offensive line is extremely versatile and deep. Gutekunst also drafted three rookies in Sean Ryan, Zach Thome and Rasheed Walker. Everyone can play multiple positions.
When David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins are fully healthy, this will be one of the deepest lines in the entire league.
When you have a ground attack like the Packers do, there won’t be many problems on offense.
Running backs Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon formed a two-headed monster in the backfield last season. Both recorded over 1,000 scrimmage yards and combined for 17 total touchdowns.
With Green Bay’s deep offensive line and talented running backs, the ground attack should be the best in the game. But then again, if all else fails, they have arguably the greatest quarterback of all time to throw the football.
Defensively, it is much less complex.
Defensive coordinator Joe Barry enters his second season in Green Bay. Remember, he had a Packers defense that functioned as a top-10 unit last year without Jair Alexander and Za’Darius Smith.
Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark is in charge. He is joined by tight end Rashaan Gary and first-team All-Pro linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, who is the quiet leader of this defense.
The Packers’ quarterback room might be the best in the league.
Alexander is back healthy, along with standout Russell Douglas and impressive sophomore Eric Stokes.
Safeties Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage form a thunderous ball-fighting duo in the backfield.
The Packers look like an elite top-five defense. They also added two tough Georgia defenders in ILB Quai Walker and DT Devonte Wyatt. Things are about to get scary in Green Bay.
After signing Rich Bisaccio, the special teams woes seem to be slipping away. The man has almost 40 years of coaching experience.
The team drafted multiple, possible special teams returners such as receivers Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs. Fifteen-year-old shooting guard Mason Crosby is back from his magical right leg launching rockets.
The addition of a cold weather player and holder in Pat O’Donnell will do wonders for the goal and field position plays. If the Packers can just become a middle unit on special teams, they’ll be in great shape come January.
Matt LaFleur will once again have this team ready. They should win their division pretty easily.
With their unique offense, led by their world-class QB, their elite defense, led by a plethora of playmakers, and their improved special teams, this team will be better in the long run.
Even with the losses of Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Za’Darius Smith and Billy Turner, they’ll be in prime position to make a run at the Super Bowl once again.
This time will be different. No one knows where the ball is going in attack. Defense is absolutely complex. Special teams will be much better. Matt LaFleur will prepare this team. Trust him.
